Cisco and ThousandEyes to enable visibility across the internet as the ‘new network’

2020 has been a year not quite like any other for ThousandEyes Inc., a network intelligence company that produces software that analyzes the performance of local and wide area networks. Cisco Systems Inc. completed acquiring the company in August, and this took place in the midst of dealing with a pandemic where people worked from home and the internet became crucial for network operations and automation for companies across the globe.

So how is this acquisition moving forward into the continuing digital transformation?

“It’s really been an exciting six months for ThousandEyes,” said Joe Vaccaro (pictured), vice president of product at ThousandEyes. “That change [of the pandemic] alone really … amplified even some of the fundamental beliefs that we have as a company. Digital gardens let you cultivate your own little bit of the internet

Beneath the umbrella term, however, digital gardens don’t follow rules. They’re not blogs, short for “weblogs,” a term that suggests a time-stamped record of thought. They’re not a social-media platform—connections are made, but often it’s through linking to other digital gardens, or gathering in forums like Reddit and Telegram to nerd out over code.

Tom Critchlow, a consultant who has been cultivating his digital garden for years, spells out the main difference between old-school blogging and digital gardening. “With blogging, you’re talking to a large audience,” he says. “With digital gardening, you’re talking to yourself. You focus on what you want to cultivate over time.”

What they have in common is that they can be edited at any time to reflect evolution and change. The idea is similar to editing a Wikipedia entry, though digital gardens are not meant to be the ultimate word on a topic. As a slower,

Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center uses internet personalities, celebs to fight child abuse

The project, which is directed toward parents, teachers, school counselors and children, was developed to meet the needs of those isolated by COVID-19 and designed to connect with young people where they are — online. The $1.5 million nationwide campaign aims to educate youth on how to reach out to a trusted adult and empower them to disclose their abuse.

The two big telecommunication companies in the country were included among the most improved internet providers of 4G availability in the world despite the still slow internet speed compared to other countries.

UK-based Opensignal Ltd. listed Smart Communications and Globe Telecommunications in the roster of the top 30 mobile network operators in the world that improved its services in terms of 4G internet connections and video experience.

The report was based on the mobile network experience between the first six months of 2019 and the first half of 2020. It has four critical measures: video experience, download speed experience, upload speed experience and 4G availability.

The average proportion of users that used the 4G of PLDT’s wireless arm Smart grew by 17.9% and Globe’s scores for video experience increased by 32.7% and for download speed by 24.5%.

Opensignal described these scores as “comfortably above the global

The fast rise and painful fall of Kenya’s internet celebrities

Gitonga, ‘the president’, is not the first Kenyan to have been thrust into the limelight by social media. Before him, there were several others. Most of them, however, faded back into obscurity. Photo: Courtesy.

Two weeks ago, Michael Njogo Gitonga, the man with an uncanny resemblance to President Uhuru Kenyatta, emerged from virtual anonymity to instant fame. Within minutes of Gitonga’s photos being shared on social media, they had been reposted on multiple platforms, turning him into a hot online conversation topic and immediately catapulting him into the limelight. Like many other ordinary Kenyans who sparked interest on social media, Gitonga found himself becoming an instant celebrity. Suddenly, several companies want to be associated with him, offering him all manner of goodies.

“We cannot meet now as we had planned because I have a meeting with Bonfire Adventures,” Gitonga said when The Standard sought him out last Friday.

U.S. global media agency demanded outlets return money for internet freedom projects

The official and others spoke to POLITICO on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk to the media.

What the outlets did: In response to the agency’s demands, Middle East Broadcasting Networks provided a paper check of $500,000, and Radio Free Asia provided a check worth $2.9 million, according to two people familiar with the matter. Until last year, the OTF was a program of Radio Free Asia. It’s unclear how Radio Free Europe responded to the order.

The plans: USAGM wants to reallocate the money to other internet freedom projects, and according to a separate agency employee, USAGM officials have been in touch in recent months with the maker of Ultrasurf, software that provides internet firewall circumvention code and which was developed by a member of the Falun Gong, a persecuted Chinese religious minority.

For the last several years, USAGM had refused to provide money for Ultrasurf
