A home chef is sparking waves of confusion online after sharing his failed attempt at making a classic breakfast snack.

The now-viral cook, who goes by the name Joe Brown on social media, shared his experiment in a pair of TikTok videos, which have since earned a combined 7.5 million views.

In the clip, Brown attempts to make a simple batch of pancakes, albeit with one crucial change in the recipe. The TikToker doesn’t use a stovetop, instead choosing to cook the meal outside — on his roof.

“I was too lazy to use the stove when I was making pancakes so I’m gonna go outside in the sun and see if I can cook them that way,” Brown says in his video, before revealing that the temperature in Arizona, where he lives, was 110 degrees that day.

Brown leaves the tray of pancake batter on his roof for four hours, before returning in a subsequent video to check on the results.

It’s clear from the first moment that the method may not have gone as planned, with the batter turning into thin, crispy flakes that Brown compares to a “potato chip.”

He then tries eating the pancakes with a fork, a knife and a big helping of syrup. Ultimately, the result is so “nasty” that he spits his bite out before swallowing.

Brown, who has devoted numerous TikToks to cooking meals on his roof or in his cul-de-sac, spawned thousands of confused comments with his pancake-cooking method. Many users seemed concerned about the chance that bugs, dirt or something far worse might have found its way into the batter.

“Me thinking: what if a bird pooped on it,” one user wrote.

“How are you even OK right now?” another asked.

Others were simply frustrated by the method itself, which they believed was doomed from the start.

“Y’all realize they like that cuz the sun absorbs water,” one commenter noted.

“Why does this make my blood boil i have no idea why,” another added.

Brown’s culinary career hasn’t been all about failures though. The TikToker has released other videos in which he’s claimed to successfully cook popcorn and s’mores on his roof.
