Apple’s assembly partners Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron have all applied to participate in India’s $6.6 billion Production-Linked Incentive Scheme, in a bid for benefits for increasing production of smartphones in the country.

India has been planning the PLI scheme for some time, with a goal to tempt large-scale manufacturers to increase their production of smartphones in the country. According to the Indian government, Apple’s manufacturing partners will be taking part in the scheme, as well as Samsung and other local mobile device vendors.

The scheme will provide a 6% financial incentive on additional sales of goods produced in the country over a five-year period, TechCrunch reports India IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informing a press conference on Saturday. Production between 2019 and 2020 will be set as the base year for improvement measurement.

Under the scheme, which has received 22 applications from firms ranging from assemblers to electronic component producers,

The smartphone market is getting a buffeting: not all of it Covid-related, Digital Platforms & Services

barack obama

Disruption is hitting the smartphone business. Like every other tech sector Covid-19 has struck some hard and others less so. That alone is enough to see rankings and prospects for different vendors change, but there are other disruptive forces out there to exacerbate things. Here’s some detail on the latest buffetings:

Qualcomm v. Huawei

Qualcomm is doing a victory lap having negotiated a back-dated and long-term patent agreement with Huawei which  gives the companies access to each other’s IP. The agreement ends a long dispute between the two with Qualcomm benefiting by $1.8 billion in the September quarter alone. That was enough to boost its share price by 13 per cent in the immediate wake of the news.

Although the US government has banned Huawei from buying Qualcomm chips, buying technology licenses is apparently OK.

According to Qualcomm CEO, Steve Mollenkopf: “As 5G continues to roll out, we are realizing

E-scooters could arrive in White Center before end of year

The new electric scooters are operated by Lime, which has tested both bike and car share programs in Seattle over the past few years. It is still possible to ride if you don’t have a smartphone or credit card, just contact Lime to learn about its discounted program for qualified riders.

King County says shared scooter use is increasing where they are available, as riding alone

A record 70% of smartphones sold in the US in Q2 2020 are made in China – Canalys

barack obama

This isn’t definitely good times for US-China trade relationships with the US government clamping down on several Chinese companies including tech giants Huawei, ZTE and of late, TikTok (ByteDance). Out of this turbulent water comes a report bothering on the US smartphone market performance in the second quarter of the year.

The report published by Canalys stands out in several ways but the major reason why we find this surprising is the disclosure that 70% of smartphones that were shipped in the US in Q2 2020 were manufactured by Chinese OEMs. This is noted to be 10% higher than the estimate for Q1 2020 which was estimated to be 60%.

The report equally shows that the COVID 19 pandemic was responsible for the spike in demand for cheap phones most of which were manufactured in China. This is due to consumers adopting a cost-conscious approach towards spending as a result
